FINAL BOOK DESIGN

Here are the front and back covers for my EMP. So thats it, its all finished, Hand in tomorrow.
During the EMP i found that this blog has been really use full, it has helped me to document and time manage this project. I hope that you have enjoyed reading my blog. So the hand in is just around the corner :( eeeeep! so there has been alot going on, i have been sorting out printers and book binding stuff.

For the prints I went to the Print Beuru, which is in bournemouth. I have to say, pretty pricey, but the ma there is a legend!

Also had a trip to London with George to pick up binding stuff from Faulkners! and here is my haul! Some glue, thread, needles, card and material. I also picked up some nice marbled paper!

Tutorial with Phil Jones and Roger Gould

this tutorial was mainly to explain to us that we need to re look at our learning agreement and make sure that it reflects what we are doing in our project. I looked at mine after this tutorial and found that mine is pretty much spot on, all I needed to do was remove a few lines which were not needed. This created a learning agreement which was easier to understand.

Target Audience. This was also discussed, and I need to find mine and narrow it down if needed. this is a really important part of the project.

The Design. General things were picked up whilst looking at my design and the main one was to change the location of the folio and make the gutter bigger. I can see why these were pointed out, and I have made time in my timetable to adjust them.

In today tutorial I talked about how I could relate my design and content to a quote that reflects the main questions of the project. From this I can decided weather to use imagery as a metaphor or use the design as a metaphor. That is if i want a metaphor!

Discussed quote "The young look to the future, the old look to the past."

This quote has a lot going for it, and feel that this quote really represents the questions that the content and research answer.

Structure was also a topic that was discussed in my tutorial. the structure must support the topic, physically, reflect what its about conceptually.

ALSO there are only 5 weeks left in this whole project! But luckily I have my Gantt chart, and im up to date and one schedule! so its not too scary!

Today I went into the tutorial with this question, which is also a problem. I have found that this has made it easier for me to get an grip on this project.

This is the BREAK THROUGH piece of research for my EMP, i was so excited when i found this that i just had to put this on here, and not only is there alot on it in creditable stites, its basically the biggest thing in science right now! there is information everywhere. THIS connects the brain and a computer together! This is the EVIDENCE I need.

Brain chip reads man's thoughts

The "chip" reads brain signals

A paralysed man in the US has become the first person to benefit from a brain chip that reads his mind.

Matthew Nagle, 25, was left paralysed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair after a knife attack in 2001.

The pioneering surgery at New England Sinai Hospital, Massachusetts, last summer means he can now control everyday objects by thought alone.

The brain chip reads his mind and sends the thoughts to a computer to decipher.

Mind over matter

He can think his TV on and off, change channels and alter the volume thanks to the technology and software linked to devices in his home.

Scientists have been working for some time to devise a way to enable paralysed people to control devices with the brain.

Studies have shown that monkeys can control a computer with electrodes implanted into their brain.

It's quite remarkable

Dr Richard Apps, neurophysiologist from Bristol University

Recently four people, two of them partly paralysed wheelchair users, were able to move a computer cursor while wearing a cap with 64 electrodes that pick up brain waves.

Mr Nagle's device, called BrainGate, consists of nearly 100 hair-thin electrodes implanted a millimetre deep into part of the motor cortex of his brain that controls movement.

Wires feed the information from the electrodes into a computer which analyses the brain signals.

The signals are interpreted and translated into cursor movements, offering the user an alternative way to control devices such as a computer with thought.

Motor control

Professor John Donoghue, an expert on neuroscience at Brown University, Rhode Island, is the scientist behind the device produced by Cyberkinetics.

He said: "The computer screen is basically a TV remote control panel, and in order to indicate a selection he merely has to pass the cursor over an icon, and that's equivalent to a click when he goes over that icon."

Mr Nagle has also been able to use thought to move a prosthetic hand and robotic arm to grab sweets from one person's hand and place them into another.

Professor Donoghue hopes that ultimately implants such as this will allow people with paralysis to regain the use of their limbs.

The long term aim is to design a package the size of a mobile phone that will run on batteries, and to electrically stimulate the patient's own muscles. This will be difficult.

The simple movements we took for granted involved complex electrical signals which would be hard to replicate, Dr Richard Apps, a neurophysiologist from Bristol University, UK, told the BBC News website.

He said there were millions of neurones in the brain involved with movement. The brain chip taps into only a very small number of these. But he said the work was extremely exciting.

"It's quite remarkable. They have taken research to the next stage to have a clear benefit for a patient that otherwise would not be able to move.

"It seems that they have cracked the crucial step and arguably the most challenging step to get hand movements.

"Just to be able to grasp an object is a major step forward."

He said it might be possible to hone this further to achieve finer movements of the hand.

Matthew Nagel's story is featured in a Frontiers programme on BBC Radio Four on Wednesday 13 April, 2005, at 2100 BST.

So in the previous post I explained how I am looking into the diary, and how this came about from an artice that I read online about downloading memories. From this I entered the tutorial today a bit lost in where to head next.

Martin said to come up with a scenario, maybe about 5. this would help me to be creative and readdress what the diary is as an object an as a part of peoples lifes. As well an scenario create a problem.

Problems are there to be solved, so this is a good place to start to think of something as an end product.

Got given out EMP briefs this week, as well as our first tutorials on concept generation for the project. To get things started I decided to look at the news websites to see if anything was happening in the world which was interesting and motivating. Here are some examples of what i have found.

Pirates seize second UK-flagged vessel in days

A UK-flagged cargo ship with 25 crew has been seized by pirates off Somalia, media reports say.

The Asian Glory was taken 620 miles (1,000km) off the Horn of Africa nation's coast, the Bulgarian foreign ministry said.

The vessel, which has a multi-national crew, is the second UK-flagged ship hijacked in days, after chemical tanker the St James Park was seized on Monday.

The waters around Somalia are among the most dangerous in the world.

Sweden culls its resurgent wolves

Grey wolves have made a comeback since hunting was banned

Swedish hunters have begun culling wolves for the first time in 45 years after parliament ruled that numbers needed to be reduced again.

More than half the quota of 27 may have died on the first day alone with nine shot dead in Dalarna and up to nine killed in Varmland, Swedish radio says.

Hunters have until 15 February to complete the cull, which will leave Sweden with an estimated 210 wolves.

Schools closed and travellers hit as snow continues

Thousands of motorists have been delayed or stranded by the snow

Thousands of schools are closed and travellers have been hit by major disruption after new heavy snowfalls hit large parts of the UK.

Parts of Scotland and northern England have had more snow, which has also spread to southern areas of the UK.

Up to 5,000 homes in Sussex are without electricity after heavy snow brought down power lines to several villages.

Some rail firms have reduced services, many roads are badly affected and flights have been delayed or cancelled.

The worst-hit areas have been central southern England and parts of the South West and south Wales.

Counties most affected include Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Berkshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire.

We had a tutorial with Anna today about the theory project that I need to do to progress onto the 3rd year of Graphic Design BA.

I am quite nervous about this as I am not the strongest of writers and i feel that I am going to struggle with writing a long essay. I am just happy that it is not dissertation length and that it is only 2500 words. I found I did alright in last years essay, So fingers crossed i will be able to get around the 50 mark.

I am still really enjoying work experience. Even though i dont get paid for the 1 day a week i do there i feel that the experience that i do gain is quite priceless. and i am alsways learning and being more professional in my work.

i feel that this has had positive and negative effects on my work. the only negative point i can think of is that i no longer understand the amount of research that we have to do on the course. where as at d+r there is research but no sketchbooks or month long projects.
The positives totally outweigh the negatives as i feel that i have gained knowlege in the programs i use, confidence in my work and a good level of professionalism.

Field of study
For my professional project I plan on branding a fictional restaurant chain that offers a specialised menu of foods; this will give me the opportunity to explore identity, typography photography and graphic design, which relates to what I would like to do as a career in the future.
My main aim is to create a brand for the company and a range of corporate print designs, such as food and drink menus, receipt books, business cards, and a series of posters for an advertising campaign.

Context
My proposed media is going to be a set of print designs; it will be presented as a collection of corporate prints that works well for the company. This relates to with the work I have completed at work experience in the previous term.
My target audience for this project is broad as the restaurant caters for all ages and occasions. But as the restaurant has a specialised menu this could mean that only a certain audience will eat there. So it is important that the result is viable and appeals to all demographic target audiences. This is something that I am going to have look into while doing my research.
As this is a specialised food restaurant it has a lot more to offer then a regular chain restaurant, such as quality of food and the general experience. I aim to use this to create a unique selling point for the business. Because of this I am going to look at the current food industry to get a in-depth look at healthy living, popular food trends and trends that are yet to make an impact. Areas that are important to my project are Vegetarian, Vegan and Healthy Eating, as I would like to promote a new healthy food range. I feel that this could make the company unique from many of the current food chains that are popular today in our society company, and should be empathised to attract more people to the business.

Method
I plan to start my research by looking at the current food industry to get a further insight of the business and its policies. It is also very important to my research that healthy eating, vegetarian and vegan restaurants are looked at. As I plan to create my own menu I feel that looking at the nutritional values of food and new food ‘fads’, both of which will also be a benefit, this can help me to create a new line of healthy eating. This will then be followed by research into identity, advertising, and commercial design.
I also plan to look at designers and design companies that have exciting and innovative branding projects in their portfolios, such as Why Not Associates and Spin.
From this research I then plan to start my idea generation with everything that I learned backing up my ideas. I will progress onto a final idea that I can explore and expand to make a successful and professional branding and corporate print project.

Today we had a group seminar about our ideas.

It started at the beginning of the day and everyone had to get up and present their work in front of the "panel' (Sally, Jo and Mike Ryan) and to the rest of the class. We had a minute to present our work and give everyone a idea of what we were doing for our professional Project.
It was really interesting to hear other peoples ideas and the feedback they got. i was suprised to find that no one had the same idea, and that the range was really wide from book making to experimental self pieces.

For my presentation i showed my research booklet that i have been making with the research of the food industry. I found that this was a good thing to show as it proves that i have been doing research for it already and that i am confident in my proposal.

Today we had group crits in small numbers with Sally or Mike. Our group had Sally which i was happy about as i really trust her judgment and comments in our crits. I was really confident when i went into the crit with sally this afternoon, i had a firm idea on what i was planning to do.

Today we had a quick crit with Neil about our initial ideas for our learning proposal.

Here was (was being the key word here) first idea:

It was agreed on that that idea did not have enough depth, and that I could do better.

Screen Based Communication 2 Evaluation

This project was challenge for me. I found the software hard to use as I did not fully understand how to use it. I feel that the work shops that we had were very useful and I feel that I have learnt from them.

Overall I am disappointed with my outcome for my webpage. It did not come out how I expected it to and I feel that I have let myself down.

I had great plans for this project and I had a clear idea of what I wanted it to look like. I think that this could have been my downfall as maybe I had too higher expectations of what I wanted. As I could not get to where I wanted I started to care less about this project. I found it frustrating not to be able to do what I planned and found my motivation for this disappearing.

Once I got over that I would not be able to having it looking like I wanted I started to use dreamweaver more. After a while I learnt the basics and made the website. I feel that my website was basic and not very flashy.

Looking at other peoples sites I feel that I could have trued harder and done some more research into CSS and action script to make the site more interesting. If I could do this project again I would do what I wanted from the beginning and tried harder to achieve

a better website.

Website Problems

I have been having problems with my designs for my website.

I had this big idea in my head about what I wanted to to now it seems that I have left it too late and that I should have planned it earlier.

What I originally wanted from this was a really good looking website, but I'm disappointed with what I have been able to achieve.

I wanted to have a really cool image in the background of me sitting in a garden with my back to the camera and a big cotton sheet in the main section of the image. this was going to be my background and "blank" area for images and type.

I got told that this wasnt a good ides from someone close to me.

So it's nearly Christmas!

I would like to say that I am going home to celebrate the festive season with my family.

But as it has been for the last year (since I arrived in bournemouth) I just cant leave. I have a job that I need to help heal my bank balance. A boyfriend that finds it harder to leave his family then I do. So it just makes sense that I stay up here.

I'm going home on Christmas Day around 7 pm. Then come back on the 29th. So Im home for a while.

As for uni I have to create a plan for the holidays, so that I don't fall behind.

Visual Comunication In Context 2 Evaluation

I have really enjoyed this project, i feel that it was a really good idea to have mini projects inside it to help us kick-start the 2nd year of our project.

There were many things that i liked about the project. Mainly the way in which we had to quickly generate ideas and concepts in a short time and also produce the final outcome in a matter or a few weeks. This really helped with idea generation and my confidence in my work.

I did not find any of this project easy but there were parts of it that were easier to complete then others. I found the poster Look Again/Think Again really fun and I am happy with the final outcome and really like the piece I did. I also found the packaging to be fun as we have not don it before so it was new and refreshing.

The part I mostly struggled with was the greeting cards. I feel that this was down to me being poorly, and missing a fair chunk of time out of the time spent on crits and idea generation. But even at the end of that small project I was happy with the final outcome.

I feel for a 1st project it was really fun and that I learnt a lot from it.

Deadline Day

So the deadline day just past, And it wasn't as stressful as I thought it would be. This is mainly because of the fact I handed in my project a few days before the deadline.

The reason I did this is because I felt that I had completed the work to a high standard and that I could not improve on what I have done.

I am really chuffed that I got it in before and that its taken a weight off my mind.

Today we had our first crit for the small sub project for Animal packaging.

I did not have much to show but I did have a quick mock-up that I did. I was looking at different packaging templates, and found a fold out design that was really simple. I felt that this could be a starting point for my design.

In the crit the mock up was liked and the ides that I said were also received well. I am pleased that I have a direction to follow now, and I feel confident that I will be able to progress with this project with speed and quality to produce a effective pice.

Today we were given our new brief:

Create new packaging for their new 09 watch range. for fashion and/or sports.
(shortened version)

I have already been looking into packaging, but i do not know if i i like the project that has been given to us. I feel that watch packaging is very limited in size and in the way that it is displayed. Also i feel that it will be hard to create something new and experimental without comprising the product.

I am going to try and create somthing that is new and maybe a bit different. I am going to have to do some research into brand packaging and box design.

Things to think about

What watch? Fashion or Sport
Apple packaging
Packaging template books.

Final Crit Greetings Cards

ALL DONE!

the greetings cards are all finished now and I have completed the sketchbooks to go with them.

I am now looking forward to the next part of the brief that is packaging. I do not yet know what the actual brief is but I have been doing some research on packaging here are some examples are really effective and inspiring.

I created a wrapping style pattern for the card. I think it is effective and works well for the festive season I have chosen for my greetings cards.

I am pleased with the way that they have come out and I am now waiting for advise from the crit today.

I am back from being sick and i have just been for my crit. There were a few other people off at the same time as me due to illness. i think its going around.

For my crit i had a few examples of what i would like my card to look like, i had some examples of pop up cards, 3 dimensional cards and normal cards. I feel that having these worked well in my crit as it was obvious what direction i was taking with my greeting cards.

here are some examples of inspiration I found for my cards.

During my crit I do not think that my illustrations were not widely liked. I am ok with that as I know that illustration isn't my strong point.

I am still going to use the 3D and dimensional cards as i think that they are different and quirky.

Its times to re-think my ideas . . . . . . . .

Poorly Sick

I have missed a few days off university the last week and a bit. I had a bad cold and could hardly move!

I regrettably missed a tutorial day at uni. I really wanted to go to this to show my idea for the greeting cards. So far i have illustrated a few ideas for cards.

Heart Bird. He is my main idea for my greeting cards. I have illustrated a heart to have a beak and legs. I feel that he is really effective especially for valentines day, as he is a heart.

Hopefully i will be able to make into uni in a few days to show my ideas to the tutors.

I know a guy at home, called Alastair Sopp. Recently I found out he had a web site. I had a gander at the site. it revealed to me that he is a Photographer, Designer, and a Web Designer.

The Boex Brothers

The boex brothers are two interior/3D Creative Solutions Designers from near where I live, Portleven . I knew about them, and had seen some of their work. I only really noticed at how amazing there work was when I saw a little article about a bench of theirs being sold in Liberty, LDN.

Greeting Card Brief

Today we were given another sub brief in our Visual communication in context 2 Unit.

We have to create a series of 6 greetings cards. The theme of the cards can be whatever we would like them to be.

i am really excited about this breif as i would like to try a project on illustration. I feel that if i do this then i could expand on my skills as a designer. My drawing skills are ok, but i feel that if i try hard and really get into what i am drawing it will look good.

Things to think about:

What kind of Greeting?
What type of illustartion?
Size
Textiles?

As i said i am really excited about this project and cant wait to start.

Final L.A.T.A Crit

Today was the final crit for Look Again/Think again.

My poster was basically finished, and not much was said about improving it. I feel that people who have not seen the poster understand what it is about. Also the poster generates talk about the subject that is a good thing.

I have decided to print my poster onto translucent paper. This turned out to be trickier then I predicted. First i wanted white to be printed on the paper. We then realised that white is not a colour, Its paper colour. This meant that we had to try out lots of colours.

After much trying and printing I ended up using a grey colour and printed on both sides. I am really pleased with the outcome of the poster and now all I have to do is hand it in.

Our Own Crit.

today a few of us decided that we were going to hold our own crit. I think it worked really well as a few of us were not sure on a few points of our poster, and the input we had from other people was just what we needed.

The group of people who were in the crit was mixed as well, it was nice to have people from different 'friendship' groups.

what i wanted to know was the colour choice of my poster, or if it should be translucent.

everyone agreed that plain was better then bright colours. and that a tagline was definately needed.

I am really pleased with the way that the Crit turned out and i am keen for another!

Look Again/Think Again Crit

Today we has a crit of our posters. It was really nice to see other peoples ideas, and it has to be said that everyone is comfortable to speak up and voice their opinions.

There were a few issues raised with my poster design. It was mainly liked by everyone, but there was an issue that people did not understand what the poster was trying to say. And also that i could maybe try experimenting with colour for the type overlay.

I have really been thinking about what was said in the crit and i feel that maybe a tag line or a sentence at the bottom of the poster would work well. But what to say.......

As for colour choice i am really wanting to look at the possibility of translucent paper.... its an idea that i am working on.

Look Again/Think Again

I have chosen to look at a social theme for my poster.

For a while now i have had an idea of creating a foreign language poster, i think it is inspiration from Anette Lenz who i looked at during out Typeradio project.

I am going to create a poster that high lights the issue of the Lack of multi languages learned by English people.

A bit of a mouthful, but i am really looking forward to creating this piece. Also i would really like to use some of the techniques that i thought of over the summer.

Group Crit

Now I REALLY Enjoyed that! A good group of people bouncing ideas off one another. I have to say that that was probably the best crit we have had. I think everyone would agree.

For myself I managed to clear up some confusions about the brief and I understand more now. I was happy that my ideas were well received. The more I think about them, the more my ideas and concepts develop.

Social Idea I looked at all the different aspects of social problem, but as they are listed, that means that they are not overlooked. i wanted something that is not widely thought of. I decided that the lack of multi language British people. I believe that the numbers are low as we are a bit lazy, seeing as all the other countries know the english language. So why should we have to learn theirs? Poster design is still up in the air but its a firm idea to start on.

Personal Idea It took me a while to realise that I don't have many objects that are personal to me. Sounds and smells work more! But I don't know how to go about this....

Only a week left until crit.

Oh and I am a PAL leader.

Summer Thoughts and Ideas that are Itching to be used!

Over the summer I had many ideas for work this year. I started to write them on scrap pieces of paper that were to hand...needless to say I kept on loosing them. So I invested in a sketch book. I managed to get in the habit of keeping the book in my bag. this turned out to be a good idea as I had my ideas at random points when I wasn't even thinking about design. Here are some thoughts and ideas that I had over the summer:

Translucent paper, I really want to use this more in my designs. I have seen it be used in may publications and design pieces. And I have to say, I bloody LOVE it.

Paper Folding I really discovered that paper can be folded in so many ways at work. Believe me when your bored you do some random things. I am mainly interested in using 1 piece of paper for packaging. and how to arrange print so when folded it makes an image. Flyers and booklets I have seen about have been keeping this idea in mind.

Photography I REALLY need to use my photography A-level more. I haven't used my Holga camera yet (thanks George!) and feel that I should. So watch out for some pics I will put up soon.

Illustration I know I am not the best illustrator in the world. But when I put my mind to it, I know that I can produce some good work. The problem is I normally create good pieces when I am not actually thinking about what I am doing. I am going to force myself to draw a couple times a week....Just for the sake of being able to draw a face.

FMP I have an idea on what i am going to do...But its a secret until its more finalised.

Others I have also been Looking at countless designers and books over the summer. i feel that this has really helped open my mind to new ideas. Over the summer you could have found me sitting on Boarders floor surrounded by the design books......not once did I get asked to leave. 3 hours was my record time on the floor. I loved Every second.

So there it is, its only a outline of my ideas. My sketchbook is full with different ideas branching off the main ideas I have stated.
